This photo was taken in early 1950 when I was departing from Mt. St. Michel on my first bicycle trip through France.  I was the first American in the Youth Hostels I stayed in, and when no youth hostel was available, I slept in a farmer’s barn or looked for a tavern with a “Routiers” sign, which meant they rented overnight rooms for truckers..therefore were inexpensive and served workman-sized breakfasts. It was later this day, in Brest, that I was hit by a truck and my copy of “Mt. St. Michel and Chartres” by Henry Adams was the most damaged item, and is on the top shelf of my Therapy Room library.
